Sclerotherapy – Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins. It involves injecting a sclerosing agent, in liquid or foam form, directly into the diseased vein. The medication causes controlled inflammation of the vessel wall, which then collapses, fibroses, and redirects blood flow to neighboring, healthy veins.

The method does not require anesthesia, and patients can return to their normal daily activities the very same day.

Sclerotherapy – Clinical Indications

The best results are achieved in the treatment of telangiectasias (spider veins), reticular veins, and varicose veins up to 6 mm in diameter. Before qualification, a Doppler ultrasound examination is performed to assess the function of the superficial and deep venous system.

Sclerotherapy Procedure Under Ultrasound Guidance

During the procedure, the doctor punctures the insufficient vein and injects a sclerosing agent, with the dose adjusted to the vein’s diameter and length. In the Tessari technique, the sclerosing agent is mixed with air in a 1:4–1:5 ratio, creating a stable foam with lower drug concentration but greater effectiveness. A single session lasts 30–60 minutes, with intervals of 4–6 weeks between treatments.

  • Foam sclerotherapy provides better results in treating varicose veins larger than 3 mm in diameter and in incompetent venous trunks, as the foam displaces blood, maintaining a higher concentration of the agent along the vessel wall.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy helps eliminate both aesthetic and functional symptoms, such as leg heaviness, swelling, and pain. At the same time, it reduces the risk of thromboembolic complications in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Clinical studies show that the success rate of vein closure exceeds 80% at one year of follow-up, although new veins may form over time and require additional treatment sessions.

Post-Treatment Recommendations After Sclerotherapy

Immediately after the procedure, the doctor places a compression stocking on the patient’s leg. For the first 24 hours, the stocking must be worn continuously while walking. After this time, it should be worn only during the day (removed at night) for a period of about 6 weeks.

For two weeks after the procedure, patients should avoid:

  • exposure to high temperatures (sauna, hot baths, tanning beds),
  • intense exercise involving the lower limbs,
  • prolonged sun exposure, as it may cause skin discoloration.

Daily walks (30–40 minutes) while wearing the compression stocking are recommended, as they improve circulation and reduce the risk of thrombosis.

Sclerotherapy at Medi Medic Medical Center Kolbudy – Qualification

All patients visiting our clinic undergo a Doppler ultrasound examination, which allows us to determine the course, diameter, and depth of the insufficient veins. Based on this assessment, the doctor selects the type of sclerosing agent, its concentration, and the number of treatment sessions required. The procedures are performed mainly in the autumn and winter seasons to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory skin discoloration caused by UV exposure. Consultations can be booked by phone or online – no referral is required.
